Ashore in Gran Canaria 2.0

We woke at a reasonable time and then headed off to collect our hire car which was about a half hour walk. Jules and I had looked on the internet and worked out some places to visit for the day.

We collected the car, sorted out our parking and then returned to collect Jules and Corinne. We heard that we could get our gas tanks filled at a place called Disa some 19 minute’s drive away. We therefore thought we would go there first and get them filled. We were using propane and we had 2 old tanks we had used we would like to fill. However, this tricky as in different parts of the world they use different fittings and tanks. We got to Disa at 11.12 and were told the time is 9-11,00am so we were too late. We would have to come back tomorrow.

We then drove on to a nice town called Firgas which is in the mountains in the North of the Island. Once you were off the main roads it was very different with little villages scattered over the hills and deep mountainous valley and very green with of African trees here. The road were like being in ghe Alps with steep sides and hairpin bends and spectular views always with the backdrop of the sea far below. Firgas was a pretty village which had two ranges of steps. One had a picture of each Canarian Island in tiles with a tiled picture of the whole of the Canarian Islands together in a row of steps with one for each step. The other row of steps was a waterfall going down several terraces with pretty tiled benches on the side and the plagues of a number of Gran Canarian towns. It is famous for its water and had a 16the century watermill. However, we did not see any water to sample.

We moved on up into the mountains to town called Teror which was down a very beautiful green valley with some amazing trees. The town had lots of little houses with balconies and looked as if what I would think a Mexican town would look like. You could almost imagine Clint Eastward coming down the street like in the Spaghetti Westerns. It was pretty to walk around and we had some lunch. It was noticeably cooler up here in the mountains.

After lunch we moved on to Galdar, which used to be the old capital of Gran Canaria. It was right on the coats in the Northwest of the Island and it was surrounded by miles of agricultural sheeting which protected whatever was growing underneath. It was a pleasant town with some nice streets where we had a drink and a cake.

We had seen 3 different places in the North of the Island which had been interesting. We returned to Las Palmas and had a relaxing supper. It was a Blue Moon i.e., a second supermoon in the same month. The next one will be 2037!. We took some great pictures to remember.

We will visit different parts of the Island tomorrow.
