Year 2 – 3 February 2025 -Cowan Creek
We woke in our little cove and all was quiet but there was no fog today. It was another hot lovely day. We had smashed avocados on toast with eggs which was a good treat.
We upped anchor and headed out of our little creek and past the marina. We motored down Coal and Candle creek again and came eventually to Cottage Point. We could see the marina, kiosk and round the corner the Cottage Point Inn – which seemed to only have 5 course or 8 course meal menu which was not right for us. Cottage Point had a café and a shop but this only opened during shop hours so would not do us an evening meal if we wanted.
We came round Cottage Point and then headed down further into Cowan Creek. We continued South and then went into Smith’s Creek. This took us a few miles into a different creek with the odd bay here and there with moorings and the odd boat. It was pretty with rocks and trees and quite remote.
We came to the end and then turned around and retraced ours steps and then headed down the final creek which came after a number of miles to Bobbin Point which was named after a rock. This also had a marina and a large picnic area. We anchored but for the first time the anchor slipped a little and did not seem to have the same mud secure bottom. We were only going to be for a few hours so I felt ok where we were. We did notice a lot of small jelly fish in the water.
We went ashore and there was a café off Bobbin Point called the Bobbin Point Inn which was not licensed. There were a lot of picnic areas and a kid’s playground. We had a milkshake and ice cream and relaxed. We then had a walk around and went into the Mangrove area which had a walkway so we had a good look around with the mangroves and trees. It was very hot and humid.
Once we had enough we went back to Stormbird and upped anchor and motored a number of miles up Cowan Creek back and then went to Hallets Beach and anchored off. We were determined to have a swim and once anchored we headed ashore in the dinghy. Once on the beach we went into the water with a look out for sharks and jelly fish. Luckily there were none and we had a good swim which was refreshing but we did not venture too far from the beach.
Once we had had enough we came back to Stormbird, showered and then had sundowners on the rear deck being fanned by the wind and warmed by the sun. It was an almost perfect situation.
Malcolm heated up an old chilli and added bits with rice etc and we had a lovely supper in the cockpit as the sun went down. It had been another great day exploring Cowan Creek with a good swim. We wait to hear about the new AIS but assume we have another day to explore before returning to Newport.
The picture of the day is Mark and Trevor working hard on the rear deck!!
